Dr. Thomas Swenson is a national leader in the field of Piano Pedagogy, teaching students of all ages in a variety of settings. A Past President of the North Carolina Music Teachers Association (2013-2015), Swenson served on the State President’s Advisory Council for the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and received the honor of becoming an MTNA Foundation Fellow in 2015. He currently serves on the Committee on Adult Learning for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy and is a board member of the Eastern Music Festival, a five-week intensive music summer music program in North Carolina directed by Gerard Schwartz.

A book based on his dissertation, Not Just Big Kids! Motivations, Preferences, Backgrounds, and Attitudes of Adult Piano Students, is an important resource for piano teachers of adult students. A regular contributor to The Piano Magazine (formerly Clavier Companion), he has also been published in American Music Teacher (MTNA), the Piano Pedagogy Forum, and several online resources. 
He has been a guest presenter at national, state, and local music conferences/meetings including the Music Teachers National Association Conference, the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, the Music Educators National Conference, and the World Music Symposium. As a leader in Adult Piano Teaching, he has taught a unique Recreational Music Making curriculum throughout the world as part of the Creative Learning Institute in a partnership with Crystal Cruises and Yamaha Music Education. Thomas currently is Visiting Instructor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and is a Master Teacher at the Music Academy of North Carolina.
